Stone's representations of city life broke new ground. Jonah was his most successful novel, published in London in 1911 and relating the story of Joe Jones the larrikin leader of a city "push". Betty Wayside was based in the middle-class suburbs of Paddington and Woollahra and told the tales of a pianist and her personal relationships.

Louis Stone (1871-1935) was born in England, moved to Australia in 1884. He lived in Redfern and Waterloo, studied at the University of Sydney and taught in country schools from 1895 until 1904.
